3ds Max workstation planning: test a representative scene

Plan a 3ds Max workstation around the installed release, required components and a representative scene rather than a single headline specification.

Autodesk 3ds Max | Windows | 12-Month Subscription digital software product

A workstation should be assessed against the work it will perform. When preparing a computer for Autodesk 3ds Max, use the requirements for the intended release as a starting point and then test a realistic project.

Check the complete setup

Autodesk publishes operating-system, processor, graphics, memory and storage requirements. Its requirements page for 3ds Max 2026 also points to hardware information. Match the documentation to the version you intend to install rather than assuming a list for another release is equivalent.

List any renderer, plug-in or asset-management component the project requires. Those components can have their own compatibility and licensing requirements. A base application launching successfully does not confirm that the whole production setup is ready.

Use a project-based test

  1. Select a scene that resembles normal work in size and complexity.
  2. Confirm that its assets and required components are available.
  3. Test opening, navigating, editing and saving the scene.
  4. Run an appropriate sample render using the intended renderer.
  5. Record the software versions, hardware and observed result.

Measure the task that matters

If the main problem is slow interaction while modelling, judge that experience directly. If the issue is completing renders within a deadline, use a representative render. A single benchmark score cannot describe every part of a creative workflow.

For a small team, keep a repeatable test scene and a short checklist. That makes later workstation comparisons more meaningful and helps distinguish a hardware limitation from a missing asset or incompatible component.

Leave room in the plan for project storage and backups as well as installation space.
