AutoCAD units: diagnose a drawing that arrives at the wrong scale

Check source units, insertion settings and a known measurement before rescaling an AutoCAD drawing or an external reference.

AutoCAD | Windows & Mac | 12-Month Subscription digital software product

When an imported object looks far too large or small, investigate its units before changing the geometry. In AutoCAD, the source drawing and destination drawing may be working from different assumptions.

Measure something you know

Ask the sender for one reliable dimension and the intended units. Measure that feature in a copy of the drawing. A known door width or surveyed distance is a better diagnostic reference than judging whether a building looks roughly the right size.

Autodesk’s troubleshooting guidance points to insertion-scale settings, including INSUNITS, when blocks, references or images are scaled on insertion. Review the relevant source and destination settings together.

Use a controlled comparison

  1. Keep an unchanged copy of the received file.
  2. Record its stated units and the known reference measurement.
  3. Check the receiving drawing’s units and insertion behaviour.
  4. Insert a test copy and compare the resulting measurement.
  5. Correct the underlying mismatch before repeating the operation on the working drawing.

Avoid compounding the problem

Applying a guessed scale factor can make one object look correct while hiding an inconsistent setup. If the file is later inserted elsewhere, the same misunderstanding may return. Record any intentional conversion and explain it in the handover notes.

For example, if one consultant works in metres and another in millimetres, agree the exchange convention at the beginning of the project. Check a sample file before exchanging a large drawing set. This small test is easier to audit than several rounds of unexplained rescaling.

Menu layouts and available tools can vary by release and platform, so use Autodesk’s instructions for the installed version.
