AutoCAD to PDF: check the layout before issuing a drawing

Prepare an AutoCAD PDF by checking paper size, plot area, scale and a sample output before issuing the complete drawing set.

AutoCAD | Windows & Mac | 12-Month Subscription digital software product

A PDF can open successfully while still being the wrong deliverable. When issuing drawings from AutoCAD, check the output against the intended sheet size and viewing or printing requirements.

Agree the output requirement

Find out whether the recipient needs a drawing for reference, a scale print or a formal issue. Record the paper size, orientation, required revision and any specified plotting convention before choosing settings.

Autodesk’s guidance on full-layout PDF output directs attention to the printer or plotter properties and paper configuration in Page Setup or Plot. Those settings deserve a deliberate review when the border is clipped or the output does not match the intended sheet.

Test one representative sheet

  1. Select the intended layout and review its page setup.
  2. Confirm the paper size, orientation and plot area.
  3. Check the intended scale rather than accepting a setting without review.
  4. Export a sample PDF and open it independently.
  5. Inspect the border, title block, linework and small annotations.

Check the file the recipient will see

Zoom into dense details and inspect the page at a normal viewing size. If a scale print is required, verify the printing setup and a known measurement. The PDF viewer or printer can introduce its own scaling choice after the drawing leaves AutoCAD.

For a drawing set, check an ordinary sheet and an unusually dense or differently sized sheet. Confirm the issue date and revision on both. Naming the final package consistently makes it easier for the recipient to distinguish it from a draft.

Keep the approved plotting setup with the project so the next issue can follow the same documented process.
