Useful editing keeps future changes possible. When working in Photoshop 2021, preserve the original image and organise the document so another revision does not require starting again.
Separate adjustments from the original
Adobe describes nondestructive editing as making changes without overwriting the original image data. Its documented techniques include adjustment layers and other methods that retain the ability to revise an edit.
Before starting, decide which file is the original, which file is the editable working document and which files are delivery exports. Give each a clear role. A folder containing several identically named “final” images makes that distinction difficult to maintain.
Use a repeatable working structure
- Keep an untouched original in an appropriate location.
- Build adjustments using editable techniques suited to the task.
- Name important layers or groups by their purpose.
- Save an editable document before making delivery exports.
- Open the exported image and check the intended size and appearance.
Make the next revision easier
A layer called “Background colour” is more informative than “Layer 14”. Keep experimental alternatives distinguishable from the approved treatment. If a client changes direction, the document should make it possible to identify the relevant adjustment.
For example, a product image may need a different crop for a banner after the square version has been approved. Preserving the original framing and an organised working file makes that change easier to assess.
Do not rely on an editable file as the only backup of valuable photography. Keep the original assets and working documents within a separate backup process, and check that the files you intend to preserve are actually included.
