Check what changed
Adobe explains that moving, renaming, adding or deleting image files or their folders outside Lightroom Classic can break the link between the catalog and those files. Start with recent changes to folders, drives or the computer.
Check whether an external drive is connected and available. Confirm that you have opened the intended catalog. A different catalog or an unavailable storage location can produce a problem that looks larger than it is.

- Check the expected folder and any recent move or rename.
- Find the actual original file before changing the catalog.

- Verify the photograph and its editing history before continuing with the rest.
Avoid creating a second problem
Reimporting a large folder before understanding the missing reference can create confusing duplicates or a separate set of catalog entries. Work from one verified example and preserve a backup of the catalog before making extensive changes.
For a moved photo library, write down the old and new folder locations. That gives you a clear reference if several drives or copies contain similar names. Check both recent and older photographs after the relink.
Once the library is working again, update the backup plan to cover its current locations. A successful relink restores access; it does not confirm that the new storage arrangement is protected.
