A proxy workflow can help when editing high-resolution material on a constrained workstation. In Premiere Pro 2022, plan how proxy files and original media will be organised before generating a large batch.
Keep the originals identifiable
Adobe documents creating proxies from media in the Project panel through the Proxy controls. A proxy is part of the editing workflow; it should not become a confusing replacement for the original source.
Decide where proxies will be stored and how another editor will recognise them. Keep filenames and folder structure consistent with the source media. If several cameras produce similar filenames, make the source organisation unambiguous before starting.
Test a short sequence first
- Choose representative clips, including any unusual frame rate or audio configuration.
- Create proxies using settings appropriate to the project and installed release.
- Confirm that the correct proxy is associated with each source clip.
- Test playback and editing on a short sequence.
- Check the sequence against the original media before committing the full project to the workflow.
Plan the handover and final output
Record which media locations are required for editing and which are required for finishing. Before final delivery, confirm the intended source media and export settings rather than assuming that a smooth editing preview proves the output is ready.
For a shared project, include a short note explaining the folder structure and proxy convention. That makes it easier for the next editor to identify a missing drive or mismatched file.
Keep an independent backup of original footage and project files. Proxies may be reproducible from the originals, but they do not replace the original material or the editing decisions stored in the project.
