A backup plan for Lightroom Classic 2021 needs to distinguish the catalog from the photographs it references. Preserving one does not automatically preserve the other.
Identify the pieces of the library
Adobe’s catalog FAQ explicitly states that a catalog backup does not back up the referenced photos. The catalog and the original image files therefore need to be considered separately when planning recovery.
Write down where the active catalog is stored, where the photographs are stored and where their backups are kept. Include external drives in that inventory. A folder name such as “Lightroom backup” is not evidence that every required file is inside it.
Build a simple recovery checklist
- Identify the active catalog rather than an old copy.
- Configure catalog backups appropriate to how frequently your work changes.
- Back up original photographs using a separate suitable process.
- Keep recovery copies in a location that does not depend entirely on the working drive.
- Test restoring a small, representative part of the library.
Verify the outcome you need
A useful recovery test should answer whether you can reopen the catalog, locate the original photograph and recover the expected editing work. Inspect a recent image and an older image held in a different folder.
For example, a photographer might have a recent catalog backup on the laptop while all original photographs are on one unprotected external drive. The catalog copy is valuable, but the photo library still has a separate point of failure.
Review the plan after moving folders, replacing a drive or changing the main computer. Those changes can leave a once-correct backup configuration pointing at an outdated location.
