A photography workflow is easier to maintain when each file has a clear role. If you use Photoshop 2021 with Lightroom Classic 2021, decide how the original photo, external edit and final export will be organised.
Check the external editor setup
Adobe documents choosing Photoshop as an external editor in Lightroom Classic and opening selected photos through the Edit In workflow. Review the installed application versions and external-editing preferences before starting an important job.
Use a representative test image to understand which file is created, where it is stored and how it appears back in the catalog. That is more reliable than assuming every file type and application combination behaves identically.
Run one complete round trip
- Select a test photo with a clearly identifiable filename.
- Open it through Lightroom Classic’s supported external-editing workflow.
- Make a small, visible edit in Photoshop and save using the intended process.
- Return to Lightroom Classic and identify the edited result.
- Create a delivery export and check it independently.
Keep versions understandable
Separate experimental edits from the approved result. Use a naming or collection convention that makes the final selection obvious without deleting useful source material prematurely.
For example, a portrait may need detailed retouching in Photoshop after a broader set of photographs has been organised in Lightroom Classic. Keep the relationship between that retouched file and its original clear so a later crop or colour change starts from the right version.
Include both the photo files and catalog information in the appropriate backup plan. A successful editing round trip confirms that the workflow functions; it does not prove that all of its files are included in your existing backups.
