Windows 11 Pro: check hardware readiness first

Check processor support, TPM, Secure Boot and storage before planning a Windows 11 Pro installation or an upgrade from another edition.

Microsoft Windows 11 Pro (FQC-10537) Retail digital software product

A licence does not make an unsupported computer compatible. Before installing Windows 11 Pro, compare the actual device with Microsoft’s requirements and decide how you will protect its existing data.

Check the whole requirement set

Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements include a compatible processor, memory and storage requirements, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. Passing one of those checks does not compensate for failing another.

Record the model and processor precisely. Descriptions such as “64-bit laptop” or “fast enough for office work” are not a substitute for checking the supported hardware list and the manufacturer’s information.

Plan the transition

  1. Identify the installed Windows edition and the edition you intend to use.
  2. Check device compatibility using Microsoft’s guidance and appropriate manufacturer information.
  3. Back up documents and any application data that is not stored elsewhere.
  4. Confirm that your essential software and peripherals support the proposed setup.
  5. Choose an installation window when you can resolve unexpected issues without interrupting critical work.

Separate activation from compatibility

A matching edition, a suitable licence and supported hardware are separate requirements. An activation problem needs the exact error and licence details; a missing hardware requirement needs a device assessment. Treating both as the same issue often leads to unnecessary reinstalls.

If firmware settings need attention, follow the device manufacturer’s instructions and retain any required recovery information before making changes. For a work computer, involve the person responsible for device management so the installation stays consistent with the organisation’s setup.
